Thermomechanical modelling of a blast furnace hearth

• Determination of masonry equivalent homogeneous material using periodic homogenization. Joint/mortar interface strength modelled by a Mohr-Coulomb yield surface. Thermomechanical finite element modelling blast furnace hearth. Joint openings and lower ramming mix initial density decrease the stress level. Validation model comparison with measurements on real furnace. A hearth is made several refractory layers materials. To improve its design to determine most sensitive zones, thermomechanical was built. The properties are temperature dependent. carbon mix, compacting which absorbs part thermal expansion, represented modified Cam-Clay model. masonries mortar joints (in bottom in ceramic cup) replaced an orthotropic that has behaviour masonries. Since failure can occur either or brick/mortar interfaces, different joint states considered (according “open” “closed” state each direction). strength, determined experimentally, taken into account through criterion. parameters were obtained, for state, periodical homogenization method. simulation performed two steps: first, computation field, second, displacements fields. experimental showed produces satisfactory results. results also importance influence openings.
